ABOUT PORTH & UNREIN
Daniel C. Porth, CPA
Dan Porth was born in Portland, Oregon and has lived in Oregon all his life. He is a 1981 graduate of Oregon State University with a bachelor’s of science in accounting. He began his career in public accounting working first for a local firm in Eugene, and then in several Portland area firms. Dan joined the firm in 1989 and was on staff for two years before becoming a partner in 1991.
Dan’s primary areas of practice are much broader than just traditional accounting and auditing. He specializes in serving family-owned businesses, which includes services such as succession planning and estate planning, along with more traditional services such as income tax preparation for businesses and individuals. Dan’s area of expertise and interest include working with the solid waste industry, real estate investors, and anyone in need of advanced financial planning.

Dan’s professional affiliations include memberships in the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Oregon Society of Certified Public Accountants. In the local community, he is a member of the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce and the Optimist Club of Salem. He is active in his church having served in many different roles over the years.
Dan and his wife, Margaret, have been married since 1981 and have one son, Lane.
Mike Unrein, CPA
Mike Unrein was born in Salem, Oregon and has lived in the Willamette Valley all his life. After graduating from Oregon State University with bachelor’s degrees in accounting and education. Upon graduation, Mike worked with Moss Adams and Price Waterhouse in Portland before moving back to Salem. Mike joined the firm in 2009 and began a partner in 2010.
Mike’s main areas of practice include small businesses, manufacturing, restaurants and retail businesses. His practice includes traditional tax preparation, accounting, payroll, and business consultation. He enjoys working with people and assisting them to grow their businesses.
Mike is a member of the Oregon Society of Certified Public Accountants, as well as the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. He is a member and past president of Networks of Salem, a business referral group. He has served as a board member, vice-president and treasurer with the Mt. Angel Oktoberfest. He is also a youth basketball coach.
Mike has 3 boys: Jacob, Jonathan, and Jeffrey. He enjoys coaching and golfing in his spare time.
Firm Administrator Vicki Seed joined Porth & Unrein in 2000. She has over 25 years of bookkeeping and office administration experience. Vicki deeply enjoys the people she works with, saying they are like family. She also enjoys reading, singing, being outdoors and spending time with her two grown daughters.
Kit Smithson has been part of the Porth & Unrein team since 1998. As a paraprofessional/bookkeeper, Kit enjoys working directly with clients, especially in training and assisting them with computer programs such as QuickBooks. When not at work, she enjoys reading, spending time in her garden, and crafting porcelain figurines. She has four grown children, three grandchildren, and a menagerie of animals including chickens, sheep, pigs, ducks, rabbits and two emus that produce baby emus annually.
Chesley Libby graduated from Western Oregon University, obtaining a bachelorís of science in business with an accounting focus. As a new addition to the Porth & Unrein team, he is excited for the opportunity to progress as an accounting professional while pursuing his CPA license.The youngest of three, he enjoys spending time with his family and his dog Cain. Playing baseball, reading, watching football, and riding quads with his brother are just a few of the many activities that Chesley enjoys in his free time.
Staff Accountant Allen D. Westbrook has been with Porth & Unrein since 2006. He has over twenty years of experience as a certified public accountant, including tax preparation for individuals and businesses; auditing non-profits, businesses, and local governments; compliance examinations for government grants and loans; design and implementation of accounting control systems; and small business management.
Allen holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Southern Oregon College, and he is a member of the Oregon Society of Certified Public Accountants, as well as the Greater Albany Chamber of Commerce.
He was born and raised in Oregon. He has two sons, two daughters, and a granddaughter. He enjoys many outdoor activities, including kayaking, canoeing, fishing, dirt bike riding, and touring on motorcycles.
Angie Wyant joined Porth & Unrein in 2009. She is a licensed tax preparer who enjoys the intensity of tax season. An Oregon native, Angie has never wanted to live anywhere else except the Northwest. She likes reading and sewing, and she’s always game to visit any zoo.
Enrolled Agent and Licensed Tax Consultant Lillian Louis joined the Porth & Unrein team in 2006. Lillian taught high school for 33 years while simultaneously pursuing a career in tax preparation. In 2007 she retired from education and committed to working full-time as a tax professional. She holds degrees from Willamette University and Oregon State University. When she’s not helping clients with their taxes, she’s out golfing or rooting for the Portland Trailblazers
Debra Hart, Receptionist - Debra has worked with Jan Grush since 2010 and then joined the Porth & Unrein team in January 2015. She has earned her associateís degree in Health Services Management from Chemeketa Community College and has a variety of work experience including health care, manufacturing and accounting. Debra has two grown children and three grandchildren. She stays active walking her dog, Seeka, gardening, cooking and quilting.
Renee Upchurch has been on staff at Porth & Unrein since January 2011. She has a bachelorís degree in Personnel/Human Resources from the University of Colorado. She enjoys creating a welcoming environment for the office. She and her husband Mike have three sons: Andrew, Jonathan, & Stephen. She also enjoys scrapbooking, hiking, reading and spending time with family and friends.
Jan Grush attended (Cal Poly) California State Polytechnic College in Pomona, California receiving a bachelor’s degree in accounting. After graduation she worked for Touche Ross & Co., a national CPA firm performing audits for a wide range of clients. She has spent time in the private sector as a cost accountant, business manager, and several small CPA firms. She has had her own practice since 1987 and brings a wide range of business experience for clients to draw on. "The best approach to a problem is usually the simple route. If it is easy for you, you will use it and get the results you want."
Jan is a member of the Oregon Society of Certified Public Accountants, and the Oregon Association of Independent Accountants. Currently Jan is on the Board of a non-profit adoption agency as Treasurer.
Jan has enjoyed horse camping with her horses, living in the woods, and always enjoys a good football game on the college or pro level.
